Definition

A “mechanism that allows voters to cast a single vote to select all candidates on the ballot from a single political party.” 2005 VVSG GLOSSARY. A “vote by a single mark, punch, or other action by the voter for all the nominees of one political party and for no other candidates.” Texas Elec. Code §1.005(20). In Tennessee, stra ight-party voting is prohibited except for President and Vice President. The opposite hol ds in North Carolina, which does not allow inclusion of the Presidential race in a straight -party vote. Once having cast a straight-party vote, a voter may override it by crossing over a nd voting for one or more candidates of a different party. Some states, such as Illinois, outlaw straight-party voting. 10 Ill. Comp. Stat. §5/1-7. Slightly more than half the states allow it. See also PENNSYLVANIA METHOD, SPLIT TICKET.
